Carmelita - Gateway to the largest Maya Center of the Known World

We support the community of Carmelita. If you want to see El Mirador, go to Carmelita and speak with the people of Carmelita about how to get to El Mirador.

There are many options to work directly with the community to secure treks, outfitting services and jungle adventures throughout the El Mirador Basin.

  1. Two friends and I went to Carmenita and were able to independently book a trip. We went there on December 18, 2011. When we arrived the cooperativa tried to give us a "price" but we declined their services. The next morning we were approached and offered a tour by a local, and also spoke with Patricia who said she could book us a tour too. It's a bit of a crazy situation, sadly. Our guide and his brother were both taking classes to earn their "carnet" so they can lead tours. The carnet cost $20 or something. So perhaps going forward things will get better. The prices of $300 per person are quoted in Flores are a rip-off, so I understand the cooperativa want a bit more of that money. And there's obviously infrastructure on the route that someone is paying to maintain. I'd like the whole thing to be a bit more transparent, alas however, it's Guatemala. Thanks for keeping up to date with it - the Mirador is amazing! Either way, adventure awaits! ryan@worldtraveldude.com
